New Dominant Internet Protocol: Peer-to-Peer
With the emergence of Napster, the Peer-to-Peer file sharing technology has become an essential part of daily Internet operations. Although Napster soon diminished after losing the court battles with the music industry, P2P applications flourished even more. New applications such as Bit Torrent, eDonkey, KaZaA, Gnutella, and WinMX replaced Napster as large multimedia files were shared by millions. By the end of 2002, the P2P protocol finally outgrew the HTTP as the most dominant Internet protocol.
Service providers, who optimized their networks for reliable web content deliveries, are now facing a new challenge. Because of its obscure nature, the P2P protocol is even more difficult to control than the web. The conventional QoS equipment provided the generic level solution, but could not keep up with sophisticated communication methods of new P2P applications.

Service providers' profitability is under pressure
The access bandwidth has become a commodity as service providers face heavy price competition. Internet transit charges from Network Access Points or NAPs are a significant variable cost of doing business. The peer-to-peer traffic accounts for up-to 70%* of bandwidth. File sharing downloads and Peer-to-Peer client chatter consume a large portion of bandwidth. Very low percentage of P2P users within a Service Provider's Network ever connect to one another. The monthly flat rate Internet access prices are fairly standard and the broadband access is becoming widely adopted. As network traffic utilization increases, service providers' profit can decrease.
ARA Peer-to-Peer Traffic Manager
ARA-PPTM is a real-time monitoring and P2P bandwidth management solution, designed for Service Providers and Enterprises. ARA PPTM offers a comprehensive P2P bandwidth management that combines file transfer connection control and door port restriction technology.Using the Layer 7 level analysis and policy management, ARA PPTM lets you control data flow for the most popular P2P applications: eDonkey, Bit Torrent, KaZaA, WinMX and Gnutella.
ARA PPTM improves service providers' business models by containing P2P protocol file exchanges to within it network, thus reducing network and operational costs. By installing ARA PPTM in their network control bandwidth usage by disallowing end-users to search files outside of the Service Provider's network and advising the end-users to use P2P applications' default port for file exchange. Since the end-users are exchanging files with peers within the same network, the external bandwidth usage and the P2P chatter are reduced and the end-users experience a higher quality of service.
High Performance
Thourghput: 4Gbit/sec
ARA-PPTM supports over 4Git throughput(Inbound + Outbound), and 1.7million Packet capture per second without any Packet loss. Even if ARA-PPTM works on the maximum performance, the CPU usage is less than 50%. Basically, ARA-PPTM supports load balancing and fail-over without any additional equipment. ARA-PPTM can guarantee network stability even in the hardware failure.

One of our customers installed ARA-PPTM to their Multi mode lines which consisted of 3 lines. They are managing 3 lines with one ARA-PPTM. There is no degradation of performance at all. As you know see below, ARA-PPTM can manage more then 3Gbit throughput.

Efficient Traffic Management
Asynchronous Traffic Control
ARA-PPTM can manage inbound and outbound traffic separately. Connection ratio will change depending on the amount of P2P traffic and desired P2P traffic amount. P2P traffic amount can be defined by IP addresses, time and P2P protocols. ARA-PPTM also performs L7 packet inspection to detect P2P traffic, and Random port P2P clients are controlled as well.
Web Administration Tool
The system operator can manage traffic easily by accessing the ARA-PPTM through Web Browser. The administrator can monitor P2P applications in real-time and set several policy based on user group, time, bandwidth, and P2P protocol.

Traffic Report
Traffic report is the additional tool for efficient network administration. It provides various network graphs such as service graph, protocol graph(L3), and network graph. So, administrator can see the network status easily.
Log Analysis & Report
ARA-PPTM is automatically logging Netflow. So, administrator can get very detailed information(more than 10 categories) of his network.
Alarm
ARA-PPTM has 5 unique algorithms to detect abnormal traffic. So, when the abnormal traffic occurs, notify it to administrator through e-mail or sound.
Useful Network Tools
ARA Networks develops additional tools which are requested by ISP clients. ARA Network provides these tools to be integrated within ARA-PPTM.
Web Logger
Web Logger analyzes http traffic and reocords various information such as client IP address, destination IP address, host name and so on.
Sniffer
The administrator can capture the packets and save as files. After capturing packets, the administrator can analyze captured packets with packet analysis tool like Ethereal(http://www.ethereal.com/).
TCP Blcok
The network administrator can block TCP connection based on source IP/port and destination IP/port.
